What is the click?

Hi All!

Rosie here, I hope to find you well as we leap our way through summer! Do you know what that click noise is when osteopaths and chiropractors adjust your joints? Well, I’m here to explain what that is and why we do it!

If you have had a consult with me already, you will know I get you to move around a fair bit, get you to touch your toes, bend side to side. Among other things, what I’m looking for is even movement through the joints in the spinal column. If it looks like some joints between the bones aren’t moving as much as they should, they are the joints that would benefit from adjusting. Adjustments are one of the most extensively researched techniques used by practitioners and have been proven to successfully reduce neck and back pain quicker compared to exercise alone, as well as to sham treatments (this basically means the placebo effect). I have attached two articles below for those who are interested, but there are dozens more out there.

What happens when we adjust - The click noise you hear, and the quick movement have 3 effects;

1 - It gets the joint doing a larger range of movement again, (which means you move better)

2 - It has an effect on the nerves that surround the joint calming down the sensitivity of the area (which means your pain is less)

3 - It causes the muscles surrounding the joint to relax. (which makes you feel better!)

Enjoy your week!
